BETHEL PUBLIC LIBRARY
SECTION 1: ACCESS TO THE INTERNET
The Bethel Public Library offers free unfiltered, unsecured wired and wireless Internet access for use with a patron’s notebook/laptop computer or other device. By accessing the Internet in this way, the patron has agreed to abide by the Library’s Policy on Public Internet Access. This policy prohibits illegal activity while using the Internet and provides examples of acceptable and unacceptable uses. Patrons are urged to read this document prior to accessing the Library's network. Copies are available on the Library’s website at www.bethellibrary.org or at the Reference desk.
SECTION 2: LIMITATIONS
Wireless access is available in most areas in the library. However, there may be some "dead" spots where wireless reception may be limited. Moving to another location in the library may result in a stronger connection. Library staff are not able to provide technical assistance and no guarantee can be made that a wireless connection will be made.
Jacks to accommodate a connection via a patch cable are located throughout the library. Staff will direct patrons to available jacks.
There are no printing capabilities.
Sound is not permitted in the Library. If audio files are accessed, the use of headphones is required. Headphones are supplied by the patron.
SECTION 3: SECURITY
The Bethel Public Library's public Internet network is not secure and provides no data encryption between the access points and the patron's device. Information sent to and from a patron's notebook/laptop computer or other device may be captured by anyone else with a connected device and the appropriate software. Also, any shared files or folders on a patron's device that are not password protected may be read, copied, and/or deleted by anyone else on the network.
It is the patron's responsibility to protect his/her laptop or other wireless device through the use of up-to-date virus protection, personal firewall, and other measures. It is highly recommended that "file sharing" be turned off on the user's wireless device. It is strongly urged that credit card information and passwords not be transmitted while using the Library's network.
SECTION 4: DISCLAIMER
The Bethel Public Library assumes no responsibility for the safety of equipment, data files, device configurations or security resulting from connection to the Library's network or the Internet, nor liability for any damages to hardware, software or data, however caused.
SECTION 5: POLICY EFFECTIVE DATE, AMENDMENTS, AND REVISIONS:
This policy is effective upon approval of the Library Board of Directors. Amendments and/or revisions to this policy shall be formulated and recommended to the Board by the Policy Committee. The policy may then be amended and/or revised at the regular meeting of the Board, following the meeting at which the amendment and/or revision was proposed.
Approved by the Library Board of Directors February 27, 2006
